Niddrie townhouses

Back to projects

The brief was for two dwellings with a design that was distinctively contemporary without being inhumane or out of touch with its context.

We set out to make the two units read as one in terms of how they sat in the street, while remaining individual. The articulated form is a response to the context. Metallic Miniorb and Cedar were chosen to provide distinctive alternative materials. We believe this building will age more “gracefully” as a result.

Internally, this type of unit often suffers from a lack of light (and ventilation) into the centre of the plan. We inserted a light well which not only provides that light and ventilation, but greatly enhances the sense of space within the units.
