North Carlton residence

Back to projects

This project involved the complete rebuilding of a Victorian Single fronted workers cottage on a tiny 110sqmsite in North Carlton.

The original house was in very poor condition and was demolished apart from the front wall which was kept to comply with heratige requirements. A new two storey dwelling with two bedrooms and a study was added. There is also a roof terrace behind the front parapet. The rear yard has been retained.

The main challenge was to improve the sense of space within the house. This was achieved by admitting natural light from as many sources as possible and by transforming the section through the house from front to back. The house is also designed for active engagement. A built-in seat and pond provide a place to reflect and stay cool. The louvre sun screen at the upper level allows the occupant to adjust the relationship with the external environment.

North facing highlights have been inserted to improve heat gain, and masonary walls are retained to increase thermal mass. Materials have been selected for low embodied energy and the flooring throughout is either recycled timber or natural sisal carpet.
